Corn Grinding Maiden fetish finely carved out of Antler adorned with Turquoise dots on the hair buns, Turquoise necklace, Coral nose, and Jet as the eyes.
Per Claudia the artist, she says that for the Shalako festival, the women of Zuni get dressed up and meet up to go grind blue corn. There are about 14 other women kneeling on rock grinder that help make the blue corn into fine dust that is later used for making different items. During the grinding they will often put some blue dust on their cheek bones to have a blue toned blush.
Artist burns the outer layer of the antler to give the carving more tones.
Measures 1 1/4 inch long, 1 inch wide, and 2 3/4 inches tall.
Carved initials on the bottom “CPZ”.
